Poznań and Wielkopolska
The Wielkopolska district, with its capital – Poznań, is one of the largest and fastest-developing regions in Poland. Wielkopolska has the second largest area in the country (29.825 sq km) and the third largest number of inhabitants (3 346 000). The size of the district is comparable with that of medium-size European countries, e.g. Belgium, or other European regions, e.g. the German Brandenburg. The population exceeds that of Latvia and is only slightly lower than that of Ireland or Lithuania. Almost 58% of the district’s inhabitants live in cities.
Poznań is situated in the centre of Wielkopolska district, in one of the main transit passages connecting western and eastern Europe. It lies half-way between Berlin and Warsaw, 160 km from the Polish-German border.
Poznań lies at the crossing point of seven important international and transregional roads. At present, efforts are made in order to make the road transport more efficient as well as to strengthen Poznań’s position as an important transportation centre. A section of the A2 motorway, which is going to start at the Polish-German border in Świecko, also goes through Poznań.
The train journey from Poznań to Berlin takes only 3 hours, trains leave 4 times a day (Euro City – 10.20 am, 2.20 pm, 7.20 pm, 9.11 pm). The city is also more accessible because of its regional airport – Ławica (www.airport-poznan.com.pl), serving both internal and international flights. There are regular flights to Dusseldorf, Berlin, Dresden, Leipzig, Hamburg and Hannover in Germany and to Copenhagen in Denmark. The airport has modern terminals – passenger and cargo.
